Special Interest Quiz Season 1 | Grouse House
When I started working at Haven’t You Done Well in July 2025, I was tasked with helping re-format a pateron exclusive series from Aunty Donna’s back catalogue to make it into a new returnable series under the name “Special Interest Quiz”. The Aunty Donna version followed each of the boys sharing their favourite special interest in a lecture format to the other members of AD which was then followed by a quiz. The chaos and fun was found in the Aunty Donna boys interrupting, being bored etc, basically being really annoying to whomever was lecturing. The task was to gameify the quiz as well as establish a returnable structure and format that was engaging and could stand alone on Grouse House without the direct involvement of Aunty Donna.
Host
One of the first discussions we had was around who could we get as a host. We ended up landing on Jordan Barr, a talent who hadn’t been on Grouse House but had been steadily racking up credits in the Melbourne and wider Australian comedy scene for years. Jordan’s pop culture knowledge, charismatic personality and lowkey teacher vibe was perfect for this project. We collaborated on writing introductions for the three participants and also used her comedic talent to help establish the tone of the show.
Casting The Lecture
Head of Creative at Grouse House, Lee Naimo pointed out that the best part of the Aunty Donna lecture series was their familiarity and we quickly realised that it is essential to cast three comedians who have worked together before and have an already established short-hand with each other. We landed on the cast of Greg Larsen, Lena Moon and Honor Wolff as they have worked together on The Greg Larsen Show and know each other quite well from the Melbourne comedy scene. They are also three familiar faces that the Grouse House Youtube audience would have already been familiar with.
The Quiz
The task was to gameify the quiz as well as establish a structure and format that was returnable and engaging. For the quiz episodes I developed ‘jumping off point questions’ as well as the returnable staple of the “passion rank” segment where the comedians have to rank the lecture’s love for their topic on a tier list.
Visual Style
Special Interest Quiz didn’t have a distinct visual look or style and we thought it imperative to come up with designs for a logo as well as elements we can use in set design. We determined we wanted a school look that didn’t feel too infantile. I pulled references from my time working in primary schools and sent of a brief to long-time collaborator and graphic designer Ryan Sim (Amargosa Creative). With a little bit of brainstorming and finessing with host Jordan Barr we came up with three distinct posters that not only provide bespoke set dressing but also an opportunity for merch sales further down the line. You can now buy the posters in a pack of three.
Results
The first episode started strong with ~ 22k views and they stayed within the 11k - 22k view range.
